Our Commitment

No One Left Behind

The Datum Initiative is more than a research hub; it is a catalyst for inclusive development.

By illuminating the pathways to well-being for vulnerable populations, we empower policymakers to craft strategies that genuinely embody the principle of "No One is Left Behind."

We are committed to fostering a future where every individual in Southeast Asia has the opportunity to thrive, contributing to the collective prosperity and resilience of the region.

Principles and Values

The Datum Initiative is guided by a set of core principles that define our approach to data justice, equity, and empowerment. These principles ensure that our work remains grounded in ethical practice, community participation, and the pursuit of systemic transformation.

1. Equity and Inclusion

We believe that access to data and the ability to use it should not be a privilege. Our work prioritises communities and organisations historically excluded from data systems, ensuring equitable participation across geographic, socio-economic, gendered, and linguistic divides.

2. Community Ownership

Data belongs first and foremost to the communities from which it originates. We promote models of data stewardship that return agency and control to communities and CSOs, ensuring that knowledge production serves their priorities, not external agendas.

3. Ethical Stewardship

We uphold the highest standards of data ethics, guided by principles of informed consent, confidentiality, and harm reduction. We recognise that the right to not collect or share data is as important as the right to access it.

4. Transparency and Accountability

The Initiative values open and transparent processes in data collection, management, and dissemination. We encourage CSOs to adopt accountable practices that strengthen trust between organisations, communities, and the public.

5. Collaboration and Solidarity

Our approach is rooted in partnership. We work in solidarity with CSOs, scholars, and activists to build shared capacity, co-create tools, and develop frameworks that respond to lived realities rather than imposed templates.

6. Reflexivity and Learning

We recognise that the landscape of data justice is constantly evolving. Our work is iterative and self-critical, allowing for continual learning, adaptation, and improvement based on feedback from partners and participants.

7. Sustainability

True empowerment is sustained over time. We focus on building lasting skills, leadership pipelines, and local knowledge infrastructures that enable CSOs to independently manage and mobilise data beyond the life of specific projects.

8. Intergenerational Empowerment

We invest in youth leadership within civil society to ensure the longevity and evolution of data-driven advocacy. Building intergenerational bridges fosters innovation while preserving the wisdom of long-standing community actors.
